Job Interview Skills for a Successful Job Offer
By Shelley Ladin

Ever wonder just why you didn’t get the job you interviewed for?  Wouldn’t it be great to know what potential employers are looking for in a new employee?  As a career coach I get asked these questions all the time.  As a former corporate staffing Vice President I know the answers.  Follow these guidelines to help you present yourself in the best possible way.
The basic skills are not basic for everyone
Communication skills are more important today than ever before.  No one has time – they want to get to the point and fast.  So today’s writing needs to be clearly stated and effective. No spelling or grammar errors and no texting abbreviations- this is not your cell phone.   If your writing needs improvement take a writing class either at a local college or online.
Writing first shows up when the interviewer reviews your cover letter and resume.  Short sentences, ineffective use of words will get your resume trashed.  Your cover letter and resume must convey your accomplishments, successes, and the value you bought to your prior employers.  Don’t know how to write a resume – get help.
Speaking skills are essential to any interview.  You are selling yourself to the interviewer and manager. They are evaluating the effectiveness of your verbal skills.  The 4 main elements of effective speaking are: eye contact, preparation, speaks slowly- don’t rush- you have no where else to be but the interview. Lastly, stay focused on the questions asked; don’t let your mind wander.  Need more help; find a speaking group to help develop your comfort level. Remember practice by video with your cell phone or camcorder.
Technical skills and knowledge are not a plus but expected.  Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint.  Don’t know these – LEARN!  Take a course or use the online free tutorial that comes with Microsoft word.  Keep learning, your resume must reflect your on-going technical training.
Remember, we like to work with people we get to know, we like and trust.  Present yourself as someone who is positive, and a team player.  Be prepared to give examples of how you exhibit this behavior and the job just may be yours!
